The statesman-like follow up by British MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has borne fruit and now air connectivity between Amritsar and Birmingham will be five days a week.

Following up on his aggressive personal lobbying and public commitment, British Slough constituency Member Parliament Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi has ensured that air connectivity between Amritsar and Birmingham increases substantially making it easier for Punjabis on both sides of the globe to have as near touch as possible. After a conversation with Union Minister Vijay Sampla, in a statement released to the media, Tan Dhesi has announced that the frequency of Air India flights will be soon increased to five days a week.

Since their commencement in February this year, the flights operate twice a week. The number of travellers to Holy City Amritsar are increasing by leaps and bounds. Those residing as far as Ludhiana in Punjab also prefer Amritsar to New Delhi, as it not only saves time but a lot of botheration too.

I thank the UK and Punjabi travellers for the enthusiasm with which they have made the flights successful.

Tan Dhesi, who is ecstatic about the response,  said “I thank the UK and Punjabi travellers for the enthusiasm with which they have made the flights successful.  There is considerable demand for these flights – a fact that I had stated during meetings with Ministers in Delhi in August 2017.”

Amritsar to Birmingham

Tan Dhesi telephonically informed the Indian Union Minister Vijay Sampla MP in Delhi of the historic meeting last week in the British Parliament about the demand for greater flight connectivity between the UK and Amritsar.  He congratulated Minister Sampla on efforts for the introduction of domestic flights between Adampur (Punjab) and Delhi, and requested that, as per previous conversations between them, more flights were needed between Amritsar and Birmingham as there was a great demand from the British Punjabi diaspora.

The #FlyAmritsar is likely to reach the skies, literally!

Ace social activist and “Amritsar as a key destination campaigner” –Harjinder Singh Kukreja, who has constantly favoured Amritsar as a prime air destination in the country, reacting to the news of more flights to Amritsar said, “In Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi as MP, Sikhs in UK have a live voice in the British Parliament. As a “Sikh of the Year” awardee, he transcends work beyond the boundaries of his constituency and country and I am certain that the Guru Ram Das Jee Airport will become one of the busiest airports in South Asia.”

As a “Sikh of the Year” awardee, Tan Dhesi work transcends the boundaries of his constituency and country and I am certain that the Guru Ram Das Jee Airport will become one of the busiest airports in South Asia.

Significantly, recently Tan Dhesi, Chara K. Singh Sekhon, Sameep Singh of the Amritsar Vikas Manch and Seva Trust UK started a parliamentary campaign “to raise the demand for resumption of direct flights between London and Amritsar.” It is expected that this will not only boost tourism but will also open up new opportunities for transport of perishable goods from the Majha region of Punjab to London which is a big market for such produce. The #FlyAmritsar is likely to reach the skies, literally.

Amritsar to Birmingham

Tan Dhesi is very keen that the London-Amritsar flights also takes off at the earliest. As stated in the press statement, Minister Sampla assured that a final decision for London-Amritsar will be taken up in due course but he confirmed that the Indian Union Cabinet had given the green light to the Amritsar-Birmingham route to become five days a week.

Dhesi said “I thank Minister Vijay Sampla and the Cabinet for their cooperation, and decision to make the Amritsar-Birmingham Air India route five days a week.  I hope that very shortly they will give the good news of the introduction of London to Amritsar route.”
