Celebrating Vaisakhi, students of Gurmat School Jakarta hold a Gurmat Camp to kindle interest and love for the Sikh way life and learn fundamentals of Sikhism.

Celerbrating Vaisakhi in a unique way, students from across Jakarta assembled at the Gurmat School in Jakarta for three days early April and imbibed the fundamentals of Sikhi in a practical way.

Breaking up in Jathas, living in tents, getting up during the Amrit-Vela, doing Parkash of Guru Granth Sahib, reciting Nitnem banis and saluting the Nishan Sahib were part of the blissful morning routine culminating in Bhangra-Aerobics as exercise on the beat of the Dhol by Ishwar Singh.

Everyone loved doing Sewa assigned to them. Cleaning classrooms, cooking food, doing Langar distribution sewa -everything was done meticulously by all with a loving smile on their faces.

The Time Management class of Inderjit Singh instilled in all the importance of planning and how it can improve our life style as well as improving our studies. The workshop on Do’s and Dont’s of Sikhi by Prem Singh saw active participation and was a unique way of learning Sikhi basics.

The game “The Amazing Race” was so much fun with each team completing a task, like a puzzle, Gurmukhi dumb charades, matching the shabads and word in Gurmukhi and also peeling potatoes and onions. Our friendships were strengthened and we developed a healthy team spirit.

Come evening and Sodar Rehras was followed by dinner and watching the movie KAUR, followed by a discussion about the movie which was inspiring and motivating.  The bonfire and Kirtan under the stars was an unique and interesting way to relate to the shabad and do Simran lead by GianiJi of the Gurdwara Sahib.

Before retiring for the day, senior students participated in a “Heart to Heart session”, where we talked about our aspirations for the future and how our Guruji’s teachings can be implemented to achieve our goals.  It was a great way to bond more and connect more with my fellow Gurmat school students.

Short camps are a cool and easy way to learn more about the Sikh way of life and get closer to Sikhi roots.
